The Cure for What Really Ails You
Posted by Don Johnson on
There are no greater equalizers than illness, injury, or death. They don’t show partiality according to what title you hold, what authority you have, what you own, who you know, or how much money you have in the bank.
None of us are invincible, and if we get too carried away with our lives and start feeling otherwise, all it takes is an accident or diagnosis to remind us of that fact.
Maybe you’re facing that reality now. Maybe you or a loved one is struggling to get well. Maybe you’ve received a devastating diagnosis. Maybe you feel alone in a battle, and are experiencing a sense of darkness, or hopelessness.
Maybe you’re doing ok right now, but it’s just a matter of time before something happens in life to challenge the status quo or sense of security you are enjoying.
Complication
Ultimately, none of us are getting out of this life alive. Our earthly, physical bodies will only last so long, and the odds are they will fail us in various ways over that short time. Ever since Adam and Eve rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden and brought upon humanity the destructive weight of sin that leads to death, this has been our fate. Not only that, our souls, too, are born with a sin nature that separates us from God’s holy, protective presence. The latter is a much more serious sickness, because unless it is dealt with, we will die an eternal death – separated from God forever in hell.
We cannot just pretend that sin is not in our life, just as we can’t pretend that a sickness is not affecting our physical body.
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8).
However, even if we recognize the sin that enslaves us, we can’t rid ourselves of its power. Sin separates us from God, our only source for true life. The only way we can prevent this spiritual death is to find a way back to Him and the healing that only He can provide.
Cure
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be this way for us (John 14:6). The Bible records some of the many miracles of healing He did among the people while He was here. But those miracles, which brought temporary physical healing, were always to point people to the much greater purpose for which He came: to heal the spiritual nature, giving the soul a rebirth into a promise of eternal life in Heaven. Jesus did this by taking our sin sickness upon Himself and suffering the effects of it, which is death. When He was put to death on a Roman cross in the first century AD, He willingly laid down His life so we wouldn’t have to.
“He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
He “bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
This is why Jesus referred to Himself as the Physician for those who were sick – sick via sin in their soul, which leads to death (Matthew 9:12-13).
All we need to do is cry out and ask for His healing.
“I said, ‘Lord, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You” (Psalm 41:4).
Comfort
God always answers a prayer of the heart like that. He’s looking for those who see their need, who understand that the sin in their life will eventually lead to eternal separation from God. And He’s calling for those people to repent, or turn from that sin, and seek Him for forgiveness and spiritual healing.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
In that assurance of salvation, you will find rest for your soul, even as you face difficulties here in this life.
Trust in Jesus Christ for your healing from sin and receive the free gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23)!
Then you can look forward to His everlasting kingdom, where sin will not exist and all physical sickness and pain will be gone forever: “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).
