Love That Will Never Let You Go
Posted by Don Johnson on
The kind of love that God offers is not love that we can find anywhere in the world. It is love that is sure, secure, and unchanging. It’s the kind of love that fills the deepest longings of the human heart. And it’s extended to you!
Sacrificial
In a lot of cases, a person may only love someone to get some sort of benefit for themselves. They aren’t willing to give more than they take, if they’re willing to give much of anything at all.
But God’s love for the world – for you and for me – is not limited by what we can do for Him. In fact, He is God – the Creator of the World – and we can’t do anything for Him that He can’t already do, or give Him anything that He doesn’t already own! He gives us everything we have, including the breath in our bodies and a heart that is beating.
But He also gave us the greatest gift that anyone can give: He gave us Himself.
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
God gave us Jesus Christ, who was also named “Immanuel”, which means “God with us”. Jesus was both fully human and fully God. As such, He was the only perfect One able to take on the punishment that sin deserves (death) and then rise from the grave in victory! He sacrificially left the perfection of Heaven to become like one of us, to feel pain and die like one of us, so that we wouldn’t have to die in our sin. Because of the love He showed, you can be forgiven, set free from sin’s power, and have everlasting life.
Unconditional
It’s easy to come by sad stories of love that went cold or walked away as soon as things got hard. Or maybe you’ve even come to believe that you’ll never find real love unless you change something about yourself or do something first. Maybe someone will love you “if…” Or, maybe love will only last “until”…
But God’s love by sending Jesus Christ preceded anything you did or could have done.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)” (Ephesians 2:4, 5).
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
God’s love is not conditioned on you or your circumstances, because it’s not based on anything other than His steady, unchanging, and compassionate character.
Eternal
And finally, God’s love for you is eternal.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?...I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God” (Romans 8:35-39).
God is love (1 John 4:8). He is also eternal and immortal (1 Timothy 1:17), and unchanging (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). If these are His very nature, then we can know that His love for us is without end.
Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection from the dead gave us the way to be freed from the burden of sin, which separates us from God, and free from death – which apart from God means we are destined to spend eternity in Hell. When you trust in Jesus Christ to save you, you can have peace with God and live with Him forever in a perfect eternity in Heaven.
Through Jesus Christ, God showed how He loves you: Sacrificially, unconditionally, and eternally.
He is calling out for you to accept His love. He desires to have a relationship with you – a sure, secure, and unchanging relationship that you can’t find with anyone other than Him.
