However, if you would read the ingredient label of the lake of fire you would see that fear is actually one of Satan’s main tactics. No one knows exactly why the Holy Spirit inspired John to catalog those in the lake of fire like he did, but it appears that “fear” is the main ingredient as it is listed even before such things as unbelief, abominations, murders, and all the others:

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

Failure to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as one’s personal Saviour is the ultimate reason people die lost. But the devil has many tools and tactics he employs to keep men from repenting of their sins and from turning to Jesus. There are many types of fear or ways the devil uses fear to hinder the lost from being saved. The first way we have briefly mentioned was accused fear. Satan will tell you hell is not that bad, and that Christians are just trying to scare you so they can control you. The irony is, he will tell you this while tempting you to watch horror movies, to play extremely realistic and violent video games or to listen to noise that sounds more like someone being tortured than it does any real music. The truth is, hell and the lake of fire are far worse than we could even imagine or could be described by any man. The Christian who tries to warn you about this is not trying to control you, but to help you break the hold that Satan already has upon you.

The Fear of What Salvation Will Cost

From there his next fear tactic will be to make someone afraid of what true salvation might cost them. Always remember, the devil will never tell you the truth. The truth about salvation is that it will only cost you those things which would cause you harm. But the devil will never tell you that. By being born again you will gain far more than you will ever lose. When I see a cross, I always see a plus sign and never a minus. Then Satan will try to make you fear what others may think about you or how they might treat you if you get saved. He will often use peer pressure as “fear pressure.” The Bible gives clear instructions concerning this “scare tactic,” and that is to consider the eternal consequences more than the temporary.

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Luke 12:4-5

The Fear of Failing God

Then if all his other fear tactics doesn’t work, he will throw a bigger one at you. That is the fear of failing God. This one is a mixture of his two favorites things, fear and confusion. With this fear he will discourage you from getting saved because you might fail God. The truth is we all fail God. The devil knows this, but so does God! God who loved us enough to die for us when we were His enemies, will not abandon us when we fail as His children. The longevity and security of our salvation is not contingent upon us not failing. We didn’t save ourselves to start with, He did. It is dependent on our Saviour and Jesus never fails. Jesus knows the weakness of our flesh and not only keeps us saved but has made a way to keep our fellowship right with the Father along our journey, even when we fail.

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1

Satan loves to use fear to keep people in bondage while God instructs us to warn the lost and to lead them to deliverance. The wrong fear will ensnare you while the right fear will release you. There is no fear of death to a child of God, but a calm assurance they are going home to the One who gives the victory over all fear through His death on the cross.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18

In reality, all throughout history, Christians have been known for their boldness. The Bible teaches of those who stood bravely while facing a den of lions, when cast into a fiery furnace, or went through shipwrecks and sailed through stormy seas. Plus, while facing many more instances that would make most men cower down or quit, they continued on while simply trusting God.

The Bible also teaches us the right kind of fear and compassion go hand in hand.

And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Jude 22-23

Don’t Let Fear Keep You From Christ

We care about your soul, and that is why we share this message and warn you of the judgement to come if you die without being saved. If you are brave enough to simply trust God, by faith, He will save your soul. You will never again have to fear death, have an unknown eternity, or face whatever this world might bring against you alone. Trust Him right now to be your eternal Saviour and call upon His name with a repentant heart.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
