When The Smoke Clears ...

Imagine a raging fire sweeping through a beautiful forest, consuming everything in its path.

Towering trees that once provided shelter and life now stand as charred remains. The flames have passed, but smoke still rises from the glowing embers. Soon, even those embers will grow cold.

In the picture, a majestic eagle returns to the place she once called home. Thankfully, she escaped the flames, but everything she worked so diligently to build is gone. Her nest, her shelter, and the beauty of her surroundings have all been reduced to ashes.

As she looks over the devastation, we are reminded of a question that every one of us must eventually face:

When the smoke clears, what will be left?

The Bible reminds us in James 4:14:

“For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that
appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

Life is precious, but it is also brief. The things we spend years building, collecting, and protecting can disappear in an instant. Our possessions, accomplishments, and earthly treasures may seem SO important today, yet none of them can promise us tomorrow.

A LESSON FROM MAPLE SYRUP

My parents had a maple syrup camp, and as a young person, I remember watching the maple water boil for hours. The steam rose and escaped through the vent in the roof. As the water boiled away, something wonderful remained — sweet, rich maple syrup.

That childhood memory has stayed with me because it illustrates a powerful spiritual truth. Imagine someone working all day to make maple syrup, only to throw away the syrup and try to hold on to the steam! We would consider that foolish.

Yet isn’t that what so many people do with their lives? We spend our days chasing things that are temporary while overlooking what is eternal. We cling to possessions, wealth, success, and earthly pleasures, forgetting that one day they will all pass away.

We become so occupied with the steam that we forget the sweetness of what truly lasts.

A WARNING FROM JESUS

Jesus taught this same lesson in Luke chapter 12 through the parable of a wealthy farmer. The man’s fields produced such an abundant harvest that he decided to tear down his barns and build larger ones to store his wealth. He believed he had secured his future and could finally relax and enjoy life.

But God had a different message for him. That very night, his life would come to an end. Everything he had accumulated would be left behind.

The farmer had prepared for his earthly future but had neglected his eternal destiny. He was rich in possessions, but not rich toward God.

THE ANSWER

When the fire has passed, when the smoke has cleared, and when the final moments of our lives have come and gone, what will remain?

The wonderful news is that God has provided an answer. Jesus Christ came into this world to offer us something that no fire can destroy, no thief can steal, and no passage of time can take away: eternal life.

He willingly gave His life on the cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, demonstrating His victory over sin and death.

John 3:16 tells us:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

WHAT WILL BE LEFT?

One day, everything we see around us will pass away. Our possessions, our homes, and our riches will all be left behind. But what we have in Jesus Christ will last forever.

So, before the smoke clears and before the final chapter of your earthly life is written, consider this: Are you living for what will pass away, or are you living for what will last forever?
