Israel remained there for 400 years and grew in great number. In defiance of the Lord, they wanted to be like all the others nations. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eI Samuel 8:19-20; 10:19\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn place of Saul who was unfaithful, God appointed David as king. God promised David that his house, kingdom, and throne would be established forever \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003e(2 Samuel 7:15, 16).\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e David reigned for 40 years. Then Solomon, his son, became king and built the first temple in Jerusalem. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eI Kings 6:1-10\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfter Solomon died, significant disagreement divided the kingdom. Ten tribes formed the northern kingdom [Israel] and two tribes formed the southern kingdom [Judah]. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eI Kings 11-12\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e[The book of I Kings records the history of the division of the kingdom into two kingdoms with two separate lines of kings. In 722 BC, God used the Assyrian army to conquer the rebellious northern kingdom of Israel and to take them away into exile. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003e2 Kings 17:5-8\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYears later God used Babylon to conquer Judah, the southern kingdom, due to their persistent unfaithfulness. In 586 BC Babylon completed their assault by destroying the temple and taking many into captivity for 70 years. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003e2 Kings 24:12-25:21\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThen in 539 BC God used the Medes and Persians to punish Babylon for their wrong-doing by defeating them in one night. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eDaniel 5:1-31; Jeremiah 25:8-12 \u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn faithfulness to His word, God would restore Israel back to the land. The Lord influenced Cyrus, king of Persia, to permit the captives of Judah to return and rebuild the temple. The second temple was completed in 516 BC. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eEzra 1:1-4; Isaiah 44:28; Jeremiah 29:10\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbout 70 years later, in 445 BC another Persian king gave Nehemiah permission to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the wall. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eNehemiah 2:1-8\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMalachi is the last prophet of the Old Testament. The shedding of His blood paid the full redemption price for all sin [past, present, and future]. Three days later He rose from the grave, proving He has power over sin and death. And He promised that whoever believes in Him would not perish but has everlasting life. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eJohn 3:16, 6:47\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfter His resurrection He was seen by many people \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003e(I Corinthians 15:5-8).\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e Forty days later He returned to the Father, God. Then He sent the Holy Spirit who comes to live in the heart of every believer \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003e(John 7:38, 39).\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e The book of Acts records the formation of the church through the ministry of the apostles as they fulfill Christ’s command to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. \u003cspan\u003e\u003ci\u003eMatthew 28:19, 20\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfter the book of Acts, the apostles Paul, John, and Peter wrote most of the New Testament books. James and Jude each penned a book also.
