I wasn’t raised reading the Bible, and I didn’t understand what it meant to have a relationship with God.

The first time I remember hearing the name Jesus was when I was about 12 or 13 years old, watching A Charlie Brown Christmas, when Linus read the Christmas story from the Bible. I had no idea that years later, that same name would become my only hope.

As I grew older, my choices led me into addiction. What I thought was freedom became a prison that controlled my life.

Then came 2003. I was arrested in Missouri and faced the possibility of 100 years in prison.

Broken and hopeless, sitting alone in a jail cell, I attempted to take my own life. But God wasn’t finished with me. I didn’t know much about the Bible. I didn’t know how to pray. I simply knew I needed help. So I cried out to Jesus.

And Jesus met me right there in that jail cell. He forgave me. He gave me hope.
