How many of those fears have you heard of? And these are only a handful of the more than 400 named phobias! Keep reading for great news about how we can overcome our greatest fears.

THE GREATEST FEAR

While not everyone experiences a diagnosed phobia, many of us will spend our entire lives dealing with various fears. In fact, surveys show that about half of adults are afraid of death. But should we be? Listen to these surprising words of Jesus:

“Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear [God] which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

We cannot change the fact that death is appointed to us all. But Jesus knew there is something far worse than death. Because we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), our never-dying souls are in danger of facing God’s eternal judgment. If anything causes us to fear, this should!

VICTORY OVER SIN AND DEATH

In the Bible we also read how Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth as a man and died on Calvary’s cross, “that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:14–15).

Jesus laid down His life as a sacrifice to pay our debt of sin, and rose from the dead to demonstrate His victory over sin and death! Now He shares that victory with all who trust in Him: “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (John 11:25). Everyone who puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior will not face eternal separation from God, but will live with Him, sharing His blessings, for eternity!

ARE YOU READY TO BANISH YOUR FEAR?

First, you must recognize that your sin separates you from God. God is ready to forgive, but you must turn from your rebellion. Run into His loving arms and put your trust in what Jesus did for you on the cross. When you call out to Him, He will forgive all of your sins and you will be spiritually reborn. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

HELP FOR EACH NEED

Being a follower of Christ removes the sting of death and the fear of what comes after. God’s presence also helps us face challenges in this life: “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). When we encounter difficulties, we can take comfort in the words Jesus shared with His disciples when they were in a boat in the middle of a storm-tossed sea: “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27).

When we feed our faith, our fears will starve to death. That’s why Christians should make it a daily priority to read God’s word and learn more about how He works all things together for the good of His children (see Romans 8:28–39).

Prayer is another tool God’s children can use to fight their fears. When we take our cares and anxieties to God, He gives us His perfect peace: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing … let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7).

Did you know? The Bible tells us 365 times to “fear not.” That’s a reminder for every day of the year!
