No one likes to miss something. If we’re traveling, we hate to miss a flight, a bus, or a train. Athletes lose sleep over the dropped ball, the missed kick, or the shot that came up short. For hunters and fishermen, there’s nothing worse than the one that got away.

In most cases, we get a second chance—there will probably be a later flight, another game, or another day in the woods or on the water. But there is one thing we definitely do not want to miss, because there is no second chance if we do.

You don’t want to miss going to Heaven.

Knowledge Isn’t Enough

Did you know that many people miss Heaven by only 18 inches? That’s the approximate distance between your head and your heart. Accumulating knowledge about God by attending a church, mosque, or synagogue will not get you to Heaven. Studying the holy book connected with your religion will leave you short. Doing good works will not put you on target, either. Trusting any of these things to earn God’s favor is like shooting at the wrong basket. You might have good intentions, but you’re going about it the wrong way.

Even if you know the right facts about God, what you know in your head must reach your heart, or soul. Just like you may know a lot about a famous athlete or celebrity without really knowing them personally, you may know a lot of facts about God without knowing Him. Heaven is reserved for those who know God personally: “This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent” (John 17:3).

Why We Miss Heaven

In the Bible there is a small word that means “to miss the mark” or “to fall short.” That word is sin. It’s not a subject that we like to think about, but if we’re going to reach Heaven, we must deal with it. Our sin is what separates us from God: “All have sinned,
and come short of the glory of God”
(Romans 3:23).

You’re probably a decent person, but none of us have the qualifications to make it into Heaven—into the perfectly holy presence of God: “Who shall stand in [God’s] holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:3-4). God requires a perfect record. Even at our best, we miss the mark.

Don’t Miss This

The only way to Heaven is through the free gift that God offers to you today. God loves us deeply and is “not willing that any should perish” (2 Peter 3:9). So He sent His perfect Son, Jesus, who bore “our sins in His own body” on the cross, transferring our guilt to Himself (1 Peter 2:24). Jesus died, was buried, and then rose again from the grave so that He could erase our guilt and we could receive His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). What a trade!

Let the truth of God’s word sink into your heart. Face the fact that you’ve missed the bullseye of holiness required by God. Admit that your own efforts at self-improvement fall short of what He requires. Turn to Him, call upon His name for forgiveness, and trust fully in what Jesus has done for you.

Through faith in Jesus, your sins will be washed away, and you will actually know God because you will enter into a personal relationship with Him.
“As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12).

Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior? God loves you so much and does not want you to miss the joy of getting to know Him and enjoying eternity with Him. You don’t want to miss out on Heaven!
