What It Means to Know God

In a big world, it can be easy to think that maybe you aren’t special enough to be noticed. But the truth is that there is Someone who always has and always will know you.

Psalm 139 in the Bible says,
"Lord, Thou hast searched me, and known me.
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,
Thou understandest my thought afar off.
Thou compassest my path and my lying down,
and art acquainted with all my ways...
Thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

Even before you were born, God knew all about you. And today He knows everything you say, think, or do. This is an amazing thought, but also a scary one. If you can’t hide anything from God, it means He not only knows all of the good things you do—He also knows the things you might try to hide.

But the thing about God is that He is also good. Even though we’ve hurt Him by being rude to our friends or stealing from our siblings or talking back to our parents, God loves us too much to let us stay that way. He also loves us too much to sit back and let us be separated from Him because of our actions.

God wants us to spend time with Him, but we must be made clean and holy so we can enter His presence. What can we do?? The Bible says our distance from God is so great that we actually can’t do anything to reach Him on our own. And that’s why God did everything.

God became like us—He sent His Son Jesus to live a human life, but did so without doing any wrong or hurtful things. And He did this so He could give up His life as a sacrifice for you and me. We could not undo our own actions, so Jesus offered up His Holy and Perfect life in order that we could be forgiven for our wrong-doings. He died for us, suffering what we should have suffered to overcome the problem of our sin.

But because Jesus is fully God, and because His sacrifice for us was perfect and complete, He was raised from the dead. Now He is in Heaven awaiting the day when He will return and make everything in creation new.

To be known by God means to be seen for what we really are, which isn’t all that great sometimes, and to be loved anyway! He has loved us with an everlasting love, and He offers us the opportunity to be with Him forever, and to know Him as a loving father, friend, and comforter even now.

To be known by God and to know Him back means that we are truly never alone, and we can find rest in knowing that we are perfectly loved, even when it feels like we shouldn’t be loved at all. And this means we don’t have to be afraid of being seen by this God, or anyone else for that matter!

Do you want to be forgiven and rest in the peace of being known and loved by God? Talk to Him—tell Him your sins, your fears, your thoughts—and trust in the work of Jesus on the cross that makes you clean! The Bible says that “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). He’s ready to welcome you into the forgiveness of His love.

What are you waiting for? Are you ready to know God? Talk to Him today, and read more about His love for you in the Bible. The book of John in the New Testament is a great place to start.

"This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent" (John 17:3).
